Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the colon. Ulcerative colitis (UL-sur-uh-tiv koe-LIE-tis) affects the innermost lining of the colon and rectum.
